70 Years of Indonesian Independence

Yesterday, Indonesia celebrates seven decades as an independent country. With its internet usership slated to reach a whopping 125 million this year, up from only 42 million three years ago, it’s no surprise that Indonesians have been blowing up the twittersphere, celebrating with #ri70.

Indonesia was once under the heel of many a colonial power. From Portuguese rule, to its period as part of the Dutch East Indies, Indonesia finally gained its independence in 1945, after five years under Japanese occupation.

Indonesia’s climbing contests

Many took the the trees participating in Indonesia’s tradition of panjat pinang.

In this contest, participants climb greased wooden poles to retrieve flags or prizes. And the results are stunning.

Indonesia’s 70 year independence marks seven decades since the vibrant country finally regained control of its destiny. Well-wishers from as far as Palestine have offered celebration to Indonesia.

After seven decades of independent rule, Indonesia undoubtedly stands as a proud example and inspiration to people’s the world over, who are waiting for their own liberation.
